He seemed so interactive and happy and it's like he's suddenly "opened" to the world and recognise people around him and can actually play with them! My new camera also came in handy and allowed me to take truly wonderful shots of this timeless moment. ;-)

I know it's been some time since we updated the blog, but we have been so busy with him, and have generated so much photos that we do not know how to sieve through them! I have like 1.5GB of photos just for the last 3 weeks and we really need some time to delete those no-good ones and archive the rest.

Ah, so happy and touched, dunno if I can sleep... ;-p

A real smile

Today my baby boy really melted my heart.

I have been looking out for the elusive smile that he gives me from time to time. However, I know that many times when he smiles, it's more of a reflex action than a genuine, happy smile. Ever since I have read this article, I have been looking out for his smile.

Today, I was playing with him (actually, "dancing" with him) while we were listening to Bee Gees (Night Fever, Stayin' Alive, You Should Be Dancing, More Than A Woman, etc.) because he seems to be really excited listening to the music while I was rocking him away. Then came that smile!! And I know at an instance that this was not the usual smile that I see, because there were distinct differences from his usual reflex smile:

- the smile was much longer, it stayed for around 3-5 seconds. Usually his reflex smile is fleeting (maybe 1 second or so).
- he "smiled" with his eyes, as in the eyes became a little "squinted" (like what we usually say 见牙不见眼). His reflex smile usually the eyes have no emotions/reactions one

It was so nice to see that he was really happy! But could not get him to smile again for the rest of the night after that. But still, I'm happy!!

9 Oct 08: My birthday celebration
Actually Kaijie's full month baby shower was over for about 2 weeks liao. We were so busy that we didn't manage to take much pictures. However, his birthday is actually 9 Sep, while my birthday is 9 Oct, so his "actual" full month coincide with my own birthday. We did a "mini" celebration on the 9th and bought a cake just to cut and take some pictures. ;-)

Our second attempt at a 全家福, this one is a little better than the one that I was struggling with a tripod since my mum was the one took this picture.

11 Oct 08: My father's birthday celeration

My father's birthday was just 2 days after mine. I have always jokingly told my mum that I was the birthday present for my father 30 years ago. ;-)

30 years later, my wife did the same thing for me. Our little astronaut was the best birthday present this year.

My parents taking a picture with the (lazy/sleeping) little boy. To be honest, I have never seen my father so genuinely happy for a very very long time. The little boy brought real joy to my family that I haven't seen/felt for a very long time. I'm so happy to see the change.

My parents enjoying a common moment of joy, at blowing the candle!

Our family side 全家福, the more complete version. Unfortunately my eldest sister is still overseas, though I have repeatedly asked her to be back for the baby shower. Hope she can quickly settle her work over there have her back real soon for good instead of shuffling between the 2 countries. Then we can take a complete 全家福,!

12 Oct 08: Baby shower round 2

We did another round of the baby shower, this time round at my in-laws place, since they wanted to make use of the opportunity to ask their relatives over to the new house to see see look look. My in-laws with our little baby:

Other picture updates

Since so long never blogged, actually got quite a collection of photos already. Picked a few to be updated in the blog. I realised that our little boy is so expressive with his facial expression, everytime that we look at him he will be make his "characteristic" looks. Here are some of them!

The standard "What is daddy doing" look:

The standard "I'm about to get pissed" look:

"Yes Sir!" salute.

Nowadays he really enjoys putting his hand up to support his head, especially when he sleeps!! But sometimes he does that even while awake, like in this photo while he's watching TV.

The "dazed" look. Also, he has already learnt now to recognise faces, so his eyes always tracks people as they are walking around, and he always knows that people are taking pictures of him!

The "O" look. He always likes to make his lips into a O-shape. But in this case, he has coupled it with a "du lan" look. Else the usual O look is with a very cute wide-eyes look!

The "don't mess with me" look:

Splashing/Bathing time! But then many times people look at the pictures or when we meet, and they say that he looks like Selene?!?

Ok, so tonight, the both of us decided to get an answer, and we both took turns to pose with Kaijie just so that we can get an answer!!

Take a look at the pictures below and drop us a comment with the comments box on the left ok?

Photo contest

I just uploaded a picture from the blog for a photo contest for little Kaijie. They cry. They poop. They puke. They pee. They keep you up all night long. There doesn't seem to be anything rewarding about having a baby.

Or so I thought.

However, even since little Kaijie was born, it is as if the world has changed. Something mysterious and indescribable simply happened, and the hidden paternal instincts simply overflowed and overwhelmed me. There is never a moment that I don't feel like hugging him. And when he's in my arms, I didn't want to relinquish him to someone else. It's a weird and wonderful feeling to have him close to me.

So to all those husbands and potential fathers, my advice is: DON'T WAIT! The world will simply change with the arrival of your little one and it will never be the same again. ;-)

Time for photos updates!

The little angel was sleeping so soundly while I was watching F1. I am embarassed to admit... but I was like REALLY looking forward to stepping out of the house...and was glad I was able to furnish a valid excuse to my MIL to go out... ;) (For once, the "wind" issue was not going to stop me from going out!) And yes... I think breathing a little of the "outside" air really kept me a little more sane... and I felt a whole lot better after I came back.... though little Kaijie was a little restless this evening.. and cried for almost 3 hours before he finally fell asleep. Felt a little guilty that I was actually quite happy to be away from him for a while, but well... they say absence makes the heart fonder right? Darling, promise I will try and work harder at my milk supply for you! Heh...

Little Kaijie seems to also have developed certain noticeable habits.... like pooping typically after a night/morning feed....he will usually latch on for about 10 mins... and stop after that.. and have a very serious look on his face... (will try and post a photo of this the next time).... this will be followed by a few sound "waves" and PRESTO! Actually, another problem we seem to face is that he will usually fall asleep after latching on... but burping after that seems to wake him up.. and then it's difficult to put him back to sleep again! But if we don't burp him, then he tends to throw out some milk as well... any advice from the experienced mothers out there??

It's official!

It's now official: our little astronaut's name is 黄凯杰! Finally went down today to get the registration done and got his birth cert.

Actually the name was already decided just before he was born, but we were arguing over the choice of the words, whether to use 杰 or 捷. I originally wanted to go with 捷 since he's born in the year of the rat, so reflect some characteristics of a rat mah, i.e., agile and fast. But we figured that 杰 would be easier for most pple and more common. Also, considering whether to go with a dialect name or just hanyu pinyin. In the end, we registered Kai Kiat for his dialect name.

M.Sc in analysing poop

"Newborn babies don’t do much. They cry and sleep. They gaze around some. They eat and spit-up. They pee and poop."

- taken from http://www.pediascribe.com/20060705/baby-poop-what-new-parents-need-to-know/

How true! Our little astronaut did not poop for 3 days when he was brought back from the hospital, and Selene and I were wondering if everything was ok. Then 2 days ago, he pooped for the first time and everyone cheered! This morning, he pooped 3 times in a row within 2 hours (from 0530 to 0730), then pooped again at 1130. The consistency changed to much more watery compared to the previous days.

So off I go to search the internet and do my research for my M.Sc in poop and got a million answer. Bottom line? I think we will just monitor for a day or so. It may look a little like diarrhea to me, but then again, some websites says it's ok. Hmm...

Oh, and one more thing, his little umbilical cord stump seems dried up. This morning while cleaning him there was a little dried blood around the area. Hope that everything is ok...

The price of parenthood?

*NOTE: JUST TREAT THIS AS SOME NONSENSE BLABBERING BY A MOTHER WHO HAS NOT BEEN RESTING WELL, AND HENCE.. NOT THINKING WELL. READ THE BLOGS BY THE FATHER WHICH ARE PROBABLY HAPPIER BLOGS*

Finally managed to sneak some time out for myself today, and decided to come online. And guess what, looks like Daddy Gee has been blogging much more than me! Caught red handed!
The past 3 days (Actually this was where I managed to blog to 3 days after our little prince came into our life. And I was supposed to have blogged this entry together with some of the pictures that we took, but think Papa Gee got fed up with my procrastination..and decided to do it himself) So let me try to start this blog entry again.....

THE PAST 8 DAYS ;) seemed to have just wheezed by so quickly, despite the fact that we had so little sleep every night...or virtually no sleep every night... so theoretically, we did have much more "awake" hours. And I must say, it has really not been easy... trying to cope with the physical healing from the birth, and more challengingly, the responsibilities of parenthood...and in a way, I somewhat feel I have lost my entire self over this period, and all I do now is to focus on the baby.... BF, catering to his every single need.... sometimes I think I don't even remember how I was like before...what I liked to do for MYSELF..and maybe only the mothers reading this can truly understand what I am going through... And as I look and think ahead.. I really don't know whether I will be able to break out of this cycle.... and I am hoping that all these negative thoughts and feelings are occuring because of my lack of rest.. and maybe some other issues..

Ok, don't intend my first blog after birth to be so gloomy actually... but prob because I have no photos to post...so ended up just taking this as a de-stresser...

And I am counting down to 12 days after birth.. because theoretically.. I can BATHE after that... (ACtually I have been quite nottie and have already taken bathes..I mean the #@$#@$@ weather is so hot!) So for those who are visiting me... don't worry..I won't STINK! ;)

Sooooooo tired...

The little astronaut has turned from the little angel into the little devil. Can never seem to understand what's on his mind! He sleeps throughout the day and stays awake throughout the night. Both Selene and I are thoroughly shacked out over the last few days (which also explains why the blogs have not been updated for some time).

Now, his new "pattern" is that he will feed on the breast for 5 mins then fall asleep on the breast! When we try to move him to sleep, he will start crying again and will only stop when we put him back to the breast. This on/off war will usually leave 2-3 hours per feed. By the time he is done, we are exhausted already and he will start the next round of war within the next hour. Really dunno what to do with him.

Daddy and baby catching their well deserved sleep after a typical war...

In the last few days, he's also starting to peel like a crocodile. Dunno if next time he will get used to the "comfort" of the bottle and stay off the breast, sigh.

Will try to take some pictures of his beautiful double eyelids sometime soon. ;-)

Pictures and updates!

Took some opportunities earlier in the day to take more pictures.

Me looking confident and suave with the baby!!
Daddy is such a bore...

Oh no! The day has been hectic for everyone and actually realised that both Selene and I hardly had any sleep since last night. It's tiring as hell and Selene is now catching precious sleep as she has to wake up every 3 hrs to feed the baby.

Realised that I can never get bored looking at our little bundle of joy. He's just so full of expressions and I can just literally look at him for hours! His face is also evolving over time. Just look at the difference of just 1 day!

Immediately after he is born: face looks bluish still and head is elongated. Bruised on the cheeks, probably due to all the squeezing through the birth canal.

Just 1 day old: face is much redder and bruises are gone. Elongation of the head is reduced and slightly more roundish. And also, the baby is a real sleepy head... ;-)

Now the challenge is to face the baby without the comfort of knowing that the nurses are around when we bring him home tmr. Need to start learning how to bathe, feed, change nappies, burp him, etc. And also learning the wonders of night life (literally).

Little Astronaut is born!

After a 14 hour struggle, our little astronaut has finally decided to face the great big world!!

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; She also "showed" last night. The whole night she was kept awake with the pain and I had to rub her stomach everytime I woke up in the night.

This morning went to work, and before I started work, Selene called to say she felt the pains coming in frequency of 5 mins. I turned around and headed home again. Called Bishan Woman Specialist on my drive back and Sharon (the clinic nurse) mentioned that the pains similar to diarrhoea is actually contraction pains and told me to admit her to hospital direct instead of going to the clinic. I sped all the way home on CTE (and even sped past a TP!) to pick her up.

The excitment is really building up now that she's admitted and the anaestician had already adminstered the epidural at around 1100h. The nurse examined Selene and confirmed that cervix has already dilated 2cm. Took a few pictures of all the equipment around the delivery suite.

The CTG machine, showing both the fetal heart beat rate and the contraction pressure.

CTG scan shows that contractions are coming about 3 mins apart as of 1150h. Many times symptoms such as contractions, back pains, movement by the baby, etc. as signalling the arrival of the little prince.

Today we had our CTG done, now being on the 38th week. Selene was kind of disappointed that there was absolutely no contractions, nada, zip, kosong, zero. I think she is kind of sick over the pregnancy and can't wait for the baby to be born! I would think that that's actually when the nightmare begins.... heheh...

Also, the prep for the baby now I think is more or less ok liao, here goes the checklist:

Baby cot - checked

Baby secure sleeper (for cosleeping) - checked

Baby pram - not checked, mass order for the MacClaren XLR failed

Car seat - checked, got a good deal at the recent baby fair in Taka

Steam steriliser - checked

Bottle warmer - not checked, beg/steal/borrow required

Breast pump - not checked, have a standby one ready (Medala Swing), to be further evaluated

Clothes - checked, checked, checked (I think this one will have many ticks due to Selene's obsession)

Baby name - not checked, aiyoh, this one argue till cows come home

Maid - checked, took a long time to decide, should be coming in a week's time

Hospital admissions - checked, paperwork ready

Pampers - checked, I think we went nuts and bought a carton, and more

Baby wipes - checked, hmm... this is really useful stuff, I'm already using it for various household chores like wiping the floor, cleaning oily hands, wiping bird shit off car, etc. I was just telling Selene that I have to use toilet roll to wipe my face and the baby can use the wipes to wipe his ass!!

Any more comments of what I have missed out? I think we are more or less there liao... ;-)

Oh, and Selene is officially on maternity leave liao, so shock! I think she's going to clear out the whole of crunchyroll, watch-movie, veoh, etc. this period...

Am I ok.. or maybe I am not.... ;(

The past few days would prob have been the most difficult period of my pregnancy.... and it's strange.. considering that I am about 2 weeks away from seeing my little one.. one would expect me to be filled with anticipation and happiness... and actually that is what I thought I will be too..

But unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be the case. And in fact, if I could coin a term, I would say I am suffering from Pre Natal Blues... and it doesn't help that my legs probably weight a ton now, my left hand seems almost paralysed from I dunno what reason, and I just feel ultimately lousy about myself.... from the aches all over...from the breakouts I am getting and just from the sheer fact that I seemed to have lost my brains! I seemed to have just gone bimbotic overnight... I can't analyse things as well, I cry over the slightest issues.. and I am just so lost about almost eveything... and no one seems to understand...and it's always extra hurting to know that even those closest to you don't seem to take your condition seriously. Must it always take something major to happen before one would be taken seriously?

This is probably going to be my most depressing post...and I pray that God will make things better for me...

It's tough...

It's tough to maintain a blog. I can't believe how freaking difficult it is to find time to blog! Now my computer kenna robbed by someone to do some upgrade so came in to skive...

It's tough to think of a name. I can't believe that 4 months just flew by since the last time Selene and I brought up the issue of a name, and till now, we have not sorted out the name. It so difficult to agree on a name that we both mutually like, or worse still, to even come up with the candidate names.

It's tough to manage work/life balance. The demands of work recently is killing me as work piles up, and at the same time, provide sufficient focus on family to ensure that things are all prep-ed and ready for the baby.

It's tough to prepare for the baby. Issues such as maid, confinement lady, who takes care of the baby after the maternity leave, infant care, etc. etc. are all swirling around in a limbo. Finding a maid is like buying the $8 mil TOTO, either u tio or don't tio. Even mundane things like buying a stroller can turn into big time stress.

Ah, it's tough.

Counting down to Hubby's return...and a Mother's love..

Yippie, 3 more days and Papa Gee will finally return to Singapore to be with us! Actually, time seems to pass quite slowly ever since I knew he was going to return this week... but I am definitely not complaining.. coz his trip has been shortened by almost a week, and I am so thankful that he can be back soon.

And I don't really know whether little KEBKT knows that his daddy is going to be home soon, because I have been having jabbing pains in my AXX, errr.. can I use this word... ASS... actually not really ass, but more the side of my butt that connects to my leg. Hee.. ok.. confusing?? Nevermind.. just know that it REALLY hurts when I try and take a step when I am walking, and when I am trying to turn from the left side to the right side at night when I am sleeping. The pain was kinda so bad that I cried last night because I just didn't know what to do.

Also, many things seemed to be happening around me, that sorta set me thinking a lot. First, one of my colleagues who is expecting round the same time as me, was admitted to hospital for bedrest probably till she gives birth, as she has low amniotic fluid and because her cervix was starting to dilate as her daughter's head was pressing down. And did I mention that just a few weeks ago, she was complaining of the same pain I was talking about...that jaring pain that made walking almost unbearable... can't help but feel a little paranoid at this moment... What I am trying to do now is to try and avoid carrying and bending to pick up stuffs (was doing lotsa that when I was trying to clean and pack the house), and just be good, so that the little one will be good too.

Second incident that affected me during this period was my colleague's son.. who was diagnosed with brain cancer, and has barely turned 1. Doctor has just performed a third operation for him in the past 3 months, and is getting him ready to go through chemotherapy. She just messaged me today to tell me that her son was crying so badly in the hospital that his brain was accumulating water, and that they could not perform the chemo on him. In the end, they had to discharge him, and get him to go back probably next week to try and perform the chemo on him. I can just imagine the amount of pain my colleague is going through at the moment, and the tremendous amount of pressure she must be facing. And I pray that God will give her strength during this period, and to bless them so that they will get through this...

Quite frankly, I was planning to be blogging something happier.... but dun really know how it ended with this. Anyway.. promise that my next blog will be one with photos and definitely something happier ok?

Emotionally challenged?

Been sometime since I updated the blog with my progress ;) So here I am back again, with my random blabber.

Wondering why I titled the blog this way? Just thought if there are words such as vertically challenged, horizontally challenged etc.. then surely there must be a term "emotionally challenged" (shall refer to it as EC for the rest of my entry). Moving into my final trimester, somehow I find myself having more cravings.. ironically.. not really cravings for food... and in fact, I don't seem to be able to eat as well as I did in my second trimester, not too sure whether it's because of the EC state... but rather.. I find myself craving for more attention. Hee.. hope this doesn't make me sound someone who is half sick in the head!

But seriously... I find myself riding the emotional rollercoaster every now and then... being really happy.. and crying uncontrollably at times. And I guess it really doesn't help that Gee is away at the moment.... but I am truly trying to be a stronger person now..so as not to add to his pressure, and of course not to stress my little one too with my "out of pitch sobs".

And oh..finally one confession... while Gee is not around..I have taken the liberty to use my 2 favourite names on my little one...sometimes calling him Kenji..and sometimes Ethan... ;) (dear, dun get mad at me!) And did they say silence means consent.. coz I sure dun hear the little one objecting!

Great Singapore Sale.... Third Trimester.. here we come!

After months and months of trying to decide on the stroller/travel system for our little one (Peg Perego, Quinny, and even the Stoke at one stage!), we finally settled today on getting the Graco travel system from Robinsons. Never knew shopping for something was so difficult!! (Hee, since I admit I am quite a shopping queen) ;) But decided to get this since we figured it was not really worth paying that much for something which we were not even sure whether the little one will like!
Just realised that time really passes quite fast.. and I am already approaching 6.5 months, which means we have slightly less than 3 months to get everything figured out! And there seems to be just so many things that have not been settled... and of course.. the biggest problem..which is WHO is going to look after our little astronaut. Somehow... I have this feeling that both our parents seem to be hoping (or hinting either subtlely or explicitly) for us to start a family, but now that we are finally on our way to welcoming another new member, nobody seems to have "volunteered" to retire or to take care of the baby for us. Gee and I are pretty sure we will be getting a maid to solve the problem, but after hearing horror stories from my colleagues and friends, I am really quite apprehensive about having a maid, and especially if I have to leave my precious one alone with her! This is actually top most on my mind now, and I somehow hope things will just work out....

Also, moving into the 3rd trimester, I am starting to feel really bulky and breathless at times! Hah, really hope I am not going to put on much more weight, coz I feel my legs can hardly support my body anymore! But somehow... the "greedy instinct" is still there...heh... so have to practice more self discipline!

Anyway, am able to have time to blog this, because my lovely husband has voluntarily cleaned the house, without me having to "remind" aka nag him about it. Actually, I find this is one of the perks of being pregnant! (Hope he doesn't read this portion) Anyway, thanks dear for making an effort to do all the house work during this period... dont think I want to promise that I will "pay you back", but will definitely make it up in other ways ok? ;)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://ourlittleastronaut.blogspot.com/2008/05/great-singapore-sale-third-trimester.html' title='Great Singapore Sale.... This time round gynae was commenting on the "beautiful" nose of the baby. Can you imagine that your job revolves either looking at black and white blobs and making sense out of the mess, or staring at the Great South? I clearly remember one of my frens telling me how he almost lost his libido while attached to gynaecology during his houseman many years back.

Managed to get back home a little earlier than usual today so managed to dig out the camera to download the pics of the (secret) Bangkok trip. I think both our parents will probably kill us if they knew that we flew over (and back) secretly!

Some random pics from the trip:

The new Bangkok airport (what's the name again??). They serve good (and special) pasta and the pizza is big! We had more than enough with just 1 pasta and pizza. I was wondering while eating how the other table across us finished their dinner with 1 more calamari order than us...

Bangkok has changed so much since our last visit (a few years back). Now all of the BTS are connected via elevated walkways just below the BTS lines. They have many modern shopping centres as well. The newest one that we saw was the Siam@Paragon (shown above, just outside of it).

We had our last day dinner at Fuji, one of the most popular (and cheap) Jap restaurant chains in Bangkok which can be found in many places. We had our dinner at the MBK branch. The last time when we were here with Alvin and Serena, we ordered so much (becoz Alvin kept saying "cheep cheep cheep!!") that all the orders filled the entire table (and more, and they had to wait for us to finish some food before they could serve the rest). The quality of the food is ok (as long as you don't expect top-notch for the price).

Last photo of the day: Selene caught red-handed stealing my money.

Ok, seriously, I have no idea what she was doing (and what I was doing actually) when this photo is taken. Have been telling myself that I should be updating it since it's coming to a month since I last wrote something, but somehow have been putting it off. And coincidentally, when I decided to log in tonight, realise that Papa Gee has beaten me to it. ;)

In fact, we have just returned from our short trip to Bangkok. Had a 4 days 3 night trip to BKK last weekend. This trip was a little different from our previous trips, in that we didn't really have a specific plan of what we wanted to do. And in fact, before we left, I was kinda worried that it would fall short of Papa Gee's expectations, since shopping is really not his cup of tea.

But surprisingly, I think we kinda enjoyed the whole holiday. Basically it was just relaxing taking our time walking around, eating, watching movie, eating, shopping, and did I mention EATING again? ;) Hah... and this probably explains why the blog is titled this way... yes.. I actually put on 2 kg in that short holiday! Amazing. Was actually hoping that it was all water retention...but no matter how hard I pee -ed... heee.. the weight just wouldn't come off. So looks like it is here to stay. Now just keeping my fingers crossed that my gynae won't scold me when I go for my check up next Monday!

And oh.. about my "loot"... am guilty to say that I got myself 5 pieces of clothings, but none for the little one.. somehow couldn't seem to find many for newborns, and was stopped by Papa Gee when I tried to be overly ambitious and buy the super big ones... but then again...baby's clothes are so cute...HOW TO RESIST. ;)

Ultrasound pics and random blabber

It's been a long time since Selene and I have been talking abt scanning in the ultrasound pics and archiving them. Just managed to dig out the scans just now. Aiyoh, found out that the pics actually have no dates one! So terok, so don't really know the rest of the stack which dates they really are. Also, realised that when you are doing the scan at the gynae, everything looked logical and clear. But now looking back at those pics, can't make head and tail out of the mass of black and white blobs.

Since I can only make something intelligible out the latest scan (28 Apr 08 for the FA scan, not to mention that I probably have no idea when the rest are done), I picked out only 2 of them to scan them into the computer.

This is the scan of the whole baby, measuring 94.9mm (as you can see in the lower left of the picture). The gynae told us that by the time the baby is X weeks old (I can't remember what X is), the length of the fetus is immaterial and the only important thing is the head diameter. Make sense, since the baby seems to be doing somersaults most of the time in Selene's stomach and in all sorts of positions. For example, doing the FA scan, he was actually scratching his ass with one of his hands, and the gynae had to gyrate the baby to loosen his grip to count the number of fingers of each hand. So yeah, length doesn't matter.

The other thing I realised abt our gynae is his obsession with my little one's willy. Here's a pic of him measuring the length of my little one's member. Yup, it's a puny little 4.4mm. But length doesn't matter right?? (or so they say, at least for now). I probably got another million of ultrasound pics with different willy's length captured during all the different scans. My gynae is rather proud that he could determine the sex of the baby when he was week 13. By week 16, he was "90% sure". During the FA scan (week 20.7, as stated in the report), he was "200% sure". And yes, I have all the pics to prove too (courtesy of my gynae).

Well, another thing that has been bugging me is the name of our little astronaut. Yes, the boy-with-no-name-for-now has inherited various names such as Kenji, Ethan, 黄黎, 黄色,黄瓜，黄金 and any other 黄X that you can think of. Sigh, realised that it's so difficult to think of a good name!

And poor Selene also has so much water retention these days that her leg is turning into "pig's leg". She can't stand for long and the legs are overly swollen and very "meaty". We have tried massaging and drinking lots of fluid (as recommended by different websites) but the problem keeps coming back. She also has all the lower back pains with the growing stomach. Hopefully things will get better in the days to come.

Butterflies in my stomach.. or are they...

I have read so much on the Internet about mothers being able to feel their babies kicking since Week 16, and my colleague share about her being able to feel hers since Week 15 or so! So I was really getting a little impatient about feeling that "flutter". So much so that on many occasions, I was guilty of "poking" my stomach intentionally, just to see whether that will stimulate little astronaut to move *evil grin* But of course, nothing I did seem to stir him from his sleep, and in fact, I think Papa Gee was upset about me trying to disturb his precious son!

Finally, 3 days ago, on last Monday, I thought I felt more than the usual rumble in my stomach, and in fact, it was something like a kick from inside my tummy. When I placed my hand gently near the area, I could physically feel a section of my tummy moving. I got very excited, and asked Papa Gee to try placing his hands too. Although I know many said that it's not possible for the Father to feel the baby till much later in the pregnancy, but I just wanted him to confirm that that was a kick, rather than my gassy stomach again. In fact, I think I have not been in such a confused state for such a long time! Wondering about every movement whether it's pure flatulence, stomach hungry or baby moving! ;)

And anyway, finally, when Papa Gee placed his hands on my tummy and concentrating for a while, he suddenly exclaimed that he felt it too! So yes, our first touch with our little one and another step closer to bonding with him.

Actually, many thoughts went through my mind during that moment. 1) The reality of the whole pregnancy -> that there is something living actually growing right inside of me 2) Added responsibility of being a good mother, taking care of myself as well as him while he is in side me 3) Whether the whole pregnancy will be smooth sailing 4) Wondering about the whole labour process (mainly the pain portion) 5) And finally, whether I will be a good mother after the birth

And during this period, I am really thankful for Papa Gee being around me, because he has provided me with tremendous support, both physically (through all the massages I make him give me every night) and mentally (when I torture him with my fav questions "Is my tummy too small" "tummy too big" etc And I really feel so blessed with the 2 of them with me and I hope i can continue to stay positive throughout this whole pregnancy and worry less everyday. Because I definitely want little astronaut to come out a happy and healthy baby, rather than a frowning one!

Sympathetic Pregnancy

I think it's common for any pregnancy that the focus is always on the mother. Naturally, it is the woman who is feeling nausea, tummy getting bigger, backaches, sleeplessness, and ultimately, the child bearing process. This tends to somewhat diminish the focus on the husband who *may* undergo similar symptoms as the wife. This is know as sympathetic pregnancy and is a known medical condition. Some places that you can find references on it are:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Couvade
http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-a-sympathetic-pregnancy.htm
http://pregnancy.about.com/cs/forfathersonly/a/couvade.htm
http://www.pregnancytoday.com/reference/articles/malepg.htm

Why am I talking about all these? Obviously to relate my own experiences! I know it sounds really weird but in Selene's first trimester, I experienced tiredness as Selene has always described! The weird thing is that whenever she complains of the symptoms, I feel the same symptoms too. Thankfully no such thing as nausea for me! And now in the second trimester, funnily I feel my tummy also getting bigger (though not a excuse for not watching my diet and exercise...). And the worse thing is that BMI is coming! Sigh. Well, all these may sound crap but that's what I have felt so far. Let's see how this goes...

Ouch....that hurts!

Goodness, went for my manicure n pedicure session today, something that I have not done in a long long while... and mind, was that a torture session or what?!?! ;(

As my little bump grows bigger, it becomes increasingly difficult to cut my toe nails, and I thought it will be a good idea to pamper myself with a pedicure. Whilst sitting on the chair waiting for my hands and feet to be prep for the session, somehow, I started to get really bad water retention in my legs.. and in fact, I noticed that I have been getting that quite a lot these few days! And then came the painful part. My pedicurist told me that my toes and feet have "expanded" quite a bit due to the water retention, which explains for the 3 ingrown nail I got on each foot *sob* And when I took a look at my toes, feet and leg, somehow it really looks HUGE.. and was I embarassed. But I have been drinking quite a lot of water these days, and cutting down on salt, how is it still possible for me to get water retention!?!??! ;(

Anyway, she comforted me and told me that it's part of the pregnancy, and persuaded me to sign up for a pre-natal pedicure, which promises using some wraps and massage to sooth away the problem spots. And I did. Read on the Internet that the problm can be so bad that you might have to change shoe sizes.. and realised that my toes have been stained by the colour on the inside of my shoes -> and it's prob becoz the shoes are becoming too tight for me. Really hope that my water retention problems will go away... coz it can be really painful... *Sob*

But well..meanwhile, will try and take whatever precautions I can...and the only good thing that came out of all these.. it's time to update my shoe warddrobe with new shoes I guess! :)

A pleasant surprise...

Went to see a doctor in the late morning from work, and was on MC the rest of the day. What was supposed to be an uneventful and boring afternoon for me, turned out to be quite a surprise, as I received a present .. to be precise.. 2 presents from my dearest hubby! (I think I was sleeping when the delivery man knocked on the door, so when he called me on my mobile and when I asked him what it was about, he answered irritably (in chinese) "Just tell me whether you are at home and open the door!" Gosh.. I would have given it to him if not for almost melting at seeing the presents! (the cute doggy and my favourite lilies!) I have always pestered Mr Ng for a Golden Retriever, so I reckon he tried to get me a "look alike" to keep me company while he is away!

Oops.. I just realised Gregory (that is supposed to be his name, from the Invoice that came with the presents ;) ) is dropping fur! Eeks. talk about premature "fur loss". lol. In case you can't see it, I placed it on the black card so it is more obvious, since my sofa is about the same colour as his fur. I am not too sure I can hold him to sleep since I am allergic to dropping fur, but I am definitely going to try and bring him into bed tonight!

And finally, a photo of my 17 + week tummy! Will try and do a weekly shot if possible, just to track the "growth". Actually I am quite proud of myself, since I managed to arrange the camera in such a way that I could take this shot (though not very well taken la). But for a person that hardly likes to touch the camera, I think I deserve an applause!

Dear, a shot of your "little astronaut" (you need to use more of your imagination), and we are counting down to you coming home!

Kimchi minestrone soup for the soul. Happy 14th Anniversary!

Just as the title of this post says.. I just managed to whip myself a bowl of kimchi minestrone soup. Salvaged whatever leftover vegetables we had in the fridge, a piece of tofu, macaroni, and of course kimchi and here I am sipping my hot bowl of soup while posting this. Surprisingly, this FUSION tastes quite good! At least it made me feel better.... drinking something warm... and I think I need all that extra fibre! Finally I appreciate stocking up the fridge with food.. which means I still get to eat something without getting out of the house! Looks like I am on my way to creating some Soup Spoon recipes!

And in fact, I think my sore throat feels slightly better! (might be psychological, since the soup is rather spicy, kinda numbed my throat.. hee) I was intending to go do some shopping after work today, but somehow, my "auto gear' just drove myself back home without much thought. I was just really tired. Was talking to my colleague today (Same EDD as I) and she shared that she was experiencing bad backache too, which caused her to be restless at night. But well, she has her husband to take care of her back...heh.. and I will just need to wait for mine to come back and rub mine! ;)

Actually today marks our 14th year Anniversary, and I think this is the second time we are unable to spend it together. Well, looks like I will just have to spend it with our little astronaut tonight and share with him all that he has missed out these 14 years. Dear, I hope our little boy will grow up to be as suave and smart as you ;) , and that he will fall in love with someone sweet and sensitive like me ok? *thick skinned*

Happy Anniversary Dear!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://ourlittleastronaut.blogspot.com/2008/04/kimchi-minestrone-soup-for-soul-happy.html' title='Kimchi minestrone soup for the soul. Got to try not to fall REALLY sick since there is no one to take care of me during this period.

I never realised that sleeping with a growing tummy can be so difficult! Get a terrible backache when I try and sleep on my back, and neither sides seem easy to fall asleep as well. That's why I end up tossing and turning the whole night. Wonder whether my little astronaut is irritated with me because of all the moving! Or maybe he feels I am rocking him to sleep?? ;)

Been feeling a bit moody and emotional these few nights too... maybe it's because the house is too quiet.. and I get this feeling that I am all alone....been having silly thoughts too....hope all these will pass soon.... it's been only 8 days since Mr Ng went away, and it will be 13 days more before he gets back... farnie.. I always thought I was a pretty independent person.. and it's only now that I realise I depend quite a lot..at least emotionally on him. ;(

We were also planning to do a short trip after he comes back, but seems like the whole world is travelling too, and it's been difficult getting air tickets! Feeling a little disappointed that all the research seems to have gone to waste.. but well.. I think we will try and work out something, hopefully!

Getting ready...

Many of my frens are already using blogs to document the journey of their new found parenthood. It always amazes me how anybody can ever find time to be updating blogs! The amount of work to setup the site is phenomenal. Firstly, got to decide on a name for the blog, then after that need to find the templates that we like. Then got to find the widgets and counters to install. Not to mention all the scanning and photo uploading that is to come!

And then there is the part about getting to use the interface. Even this post itself is "unintentional". Accidentally created an empty post while toying around with the interface to find a nice template and poop! An empty post. Can't even find an option to delete it! So what the heck, here's comes my rant... (heh)

So happen that since I'm overseas and it's a weekend, really bored and nothing to do in the hotel room (it's an honour to be reading a post from yours truly since I probably never found time to be blogging!). Really doing a lot of reading up now on choice of baby names, whether to have ang mo name or not, what kind of pre-natal classes, how is the development of my little astronaut, etc. etc. Guess it's also good that I actually found time to be surfing net for something "serious", since Selene is always nagging that I spend too much time in front of the computer!

Ok, guess this site will be updated in due times with more photos (come to think of it, we have not even taken any photos since we knew that Selene was pregnant!) and scans of the ultrasound of the little one. Updates are akan datang!

We are live!

After so long, we finally own a little spot in the vast sea of the internet!
